Fumio Takano（高野 文生）

Profile

After graduating from International Christian University (ICU) in Japan, Mr. Takano worked at Post Office, Tokyo Keizai University, and established an NPO aiming to support foreign students. Currently he is a marketing director at Daigo Corporation (http://www.dai-go.co.jp), famous for its monthly magazine "Gekkan Ryugakusei".

Opening Up Japanese Universities To The World

There are many famous universities in Japan, but they are not equally famous in the world.

As Japan is having an aging population combined with the diminishing number of children, universities in Japan are now desperate to acquire foreign students to fill vacancies of their capacities.

However, it is not easy for organizations which only had to cope with Japanese students for decades to change their style.

* * * * *

While the Japanese society is going through such a big change, Takano-san's job is to advise and consult with universities on this topic.

"Accepting foreign students" was the theme of today's Leaders Talk. Describing the current situation of universities in Japan, what tasks need to be solved to achieve a more global student profile, and a sense of accomplishment and potential of business Takano-san feels through this job. He talked about not only the topics above but also told that accepting foreign students may be one of the answers to solve Japan's labor shortage in the future.

At the end of speech, Takano-san asked the students to tell their own ideas to achieve this goal.
"Acquiring Japanese student visas should be a lot easier and sooner".
"It is bothersome that it's often we get scholarship monthly while it's necessary to pay the tuition in one payment".

Success of Takano-san's job will make universities and schools in Japan better as well as improve the society. Students seemed to be very interested in the topic as it was related closely to themselves.

Q:Why did you apply for the scholarship?
A:The reason that I applied for Honors Scholarship for Privately Financed International Students was that I needed money in order to pay for the university that I want to enter next year. Right now I borrow money from a organisation called CSN, but since I do not want to have such a big loan, so I thought that a scholarship could help me.

Q:What did they ask you at the interview?
A:At the interview, I was asked a lot of questions. For example, why do you study Japanese? Why are you interested in Japan? etc...
But in the end, I felt that the interview was more of a check, whether I was motivated in studying at the university or not.

Q:What did you do to prepare for the interview?
A:I didn't really do any preperations for the interview, because I already knew why I wanted to study japanese. In fact, the most diffucult thing was to be able to convey what I wanted to say in Japanese. For a level four student, I knew that it is really difficult to say your opinion concretely so I was really nervous.

Q:How did you use the scholarship?
A:I will use this scholarship in order to the pay my university tution fee.

Q:How did receiving a scholarship affect you?
A:I was really suprised when I heard that I got the scholarship. I thought that it was joke, but when I really understand that I got the scholarship, I got very happy! Since I had been worried about the payment for the university for a long time, I got relieved to hear that I got a scholarship on 60 man yen! I could't believe it!

Q:Any message for the people who are going to apply for scholarships?
A:Since getting a scholarship is a thing that really helps you enter the university, I would recommend any person that has a lack of money that blocking them to get to their dream to apply for a scholarship!
There are more scholarship than you think, so there is a big chance to get one!Fight, put your heart in to it, write your reasons why just you should get a scholarship, and apply! If you dont get it, apply for another!
If you do your best, your hard work will be acknowledged, and there is no doubt that you will get a scholarship!

On Saturday, Nov. 26, 2011, we had the furin (wind chime) activity.

6 students participated in it. We took the train to get to Mizue, Edogawa-ku from Shinjuku. Shinohara Furin Hompo is a 15-min-walk from the station surrounded by dismantling plants and residences. The students took a lot of pictures on the way there as usual.

After arriving the factory, they first started from glassblowing. They’re very worried about it and one student even wanted to be the last because she’s not ready yet. A few more steps were necessary until it became the hanging form. It’s interesting to see that the size of furin really depends on the lung capacity.

They started painting after the glass cooled down. It was very difficult because it’s necessary to paint inside, not outside. So everyone was very serious. One student painted with lots of colors like Monet, another wrote a message so that she could give it to her mom for her birthday present. Another painted pandas (a normal one and a one breeding at the mouth) and the other wanted to paint a devil and a dragon but it turned out to be something different. Each work was very unique.

On the way back, the students repeating “Meat! Meat!” went to an all-you-can-eat yakiniku restaurant in Mizue and the others got back to Shinjuku. Every student surely enjoyed a lot.

On Oct. 28, we had our always popular activity, Izakaya party! 43 people participated this time. Since Halloween was coming up, some students were in the costumes, but they weren't as many as we imagined.
The party started from Dancing Queen as usual. The second song was a birthday song as 3 students' birthdays were close. And after that, they got wild! They kept singing and singing until they couldn't make any more reservations.

夏

2011 Summer-term 8M
CHAN, SIU YUEN WINNIE

2011 Summer-term 6M
KIM, TAEJUN

2011 Summer-term 6M
LAFAGE, EMMANUELLE SANDRINE
